Edinburgh and Area

Sometimes, under very strange circumstances, I leave the hostel. These are some photos to prove that it happened.

Before leaving for Italy, I went on a seven day highland tour. To see those photos, click on the link to the right. -->

Forth Road Bridge

There are actually two Forth Bridges. This one is the Forth Road Bridge, which carries autos (and pedestrians) across to Fife. At the bottom of this page is a panoramic photo, taken from the same place as this one, showing the much more famous Forth Rail Bridge.
For those interested in modern Scottish literature, I highly recommend reading Iain Banks' book The Bridge.

Skating Expedition (Photo: Ylva)

Here, we went on a skating expedition in Princes Park (5 quid each to get on the ice!). Left to right are Chris (clothed!), Willem (sober!), Rachel (freezing), myself (sick), and Ylva (normal).

Bertie & Peter at Cafe Royal

Bertie and Peter [USED TO] play with Bertie's organ every Thursday night at the Cafe Royal. Well, Peter was a wanker, and now he plays with himself. Bertie is now assisted by the lovely Jen and her talented fingerings. Picture to come later.

Racing vibrator machine

The Globe, off Candlemaker Row, where we go for Quiz Night, each Monday, has a vibrator vending machine in the hallway, outside the washrooms.

The day after a party (going away, birthday, who knows?) Uncle Ronald and Aunt Christine, on a flying visit from Oz took me out to North Berwick for a day trip. The picture at right is about the most awake I was the whole time.

Arthur's Seat beyond the City

Above and below, some photos from Edinburgh Castle.

The Ferris Wheel

Edinburgh's Ferris Wheel, erected for the Christmas and New Year's season. In front of it, Waverly Station lies beneath the Waverly and North Bridges, while home lies beyond, between the two towers further up the street.

The Forth Railway Bridge

The Forth Rail Bridge links South Queensferry (right), now almost become a suburb of Edinburgh, with the Kingdom of Fife (left), across the Firth of Forth. An engineering marvel in its own time and ours, it revolutionised bridge-building completly by using a string of cantilevered segments to support free-flying middle sections.

Incidentally, Fife is now just an administrative district of Scotland, but don't try and tell the natives that. The government tried to divide it up between two neighbouring districts in the 90s, at which point there was a massive protest, and now it is remembered that Fife was a kingdom in its own right at one time.
