Italy (etc.)

This was supposed to be a two-month trip all over Europe. It ended up being a month in Italy, 3 days in Switzerland, a week in Paris, and 3 days in Perpignan. So, without further ado, some pictures:

London

On the bus with Sanna and two other Swedes

We begin with my current operating definition of heaven: Being surrounded by Swedish girls!

Lina's Birthday Presents

In my experience, Swedes have close family bonds, and in this picture, everything except the kitchen appliances and Lina's PJs is part of Lina's birthday gift from here mother. Reminds me of Ylva's copious and voluminous packages leading up to Christmas.

Cast of dead body from Pompeii

Many people died in the streets of Pompeii and were buried under hot volcanic ash which cooled and solidified. Some corpses rotted away over centuries, but the ash maintained the perfect form of the bodies, right down to folds in the clothing. This is one of many casts formed by pouring plaster into the ash cavities.

Piaza Giuseppe Mazzini

This is the Piaza G. Mazzini, one of my favourite places in Rome. Here, I spent two days, just reading a book in the sun, while the world went by. Best of all, there were no tourists, only locals (and me).

Via Barberini Gunshop

...and this is the only gun shop I ever saw in Italy. Notice that it is completely surrounded by offices for second-rate and third-world airlines. Creepy, eh?

Darius About to be Defeated by Alexander

In the archaelogical museum in Napoli is this gorgeous mosaic taken from Pompeii. It shows the emperor Darius of Persia watching helplessly as Alexander the Great slays his son in battle. Darius' bodyguard takes notice of the grave overall situation.

The Farnese Bull

The Faranese Bull

This is a closeup of the Faranese Bull. The group depicts Dirce being tied to a bull by her stepsons in retribution for the ill-treatment of their mother.

Bacchus Rides the Wine Skin

Now, this my kind of god: riding a colossal wine-skin.
